NEW MUSIC: EAT MORE CAKE – CLIMB THE LADDER, LIVE THE DREAM EP1

Eat More Cake are back with two new EPs. First, the six-track EP 1. Listen only.

This opens with the downbeat You’ll Be There, which is piano-led and indie epic in feeling. Next, Smoke & Mirrors, wants to be early Massive Attack with its angsty trip hop. Story of my Life is similarly angst ridden on a grand scale with its Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra strings. Fine as the music is, the main issue is the vocals, which are rarely strong enough for the drama of the songs. That’s why Age of Sin’s smaller scale, lesser intent and downtempo instrumental approach wins over as an expression of something more private, more personal. And why Forever Dreaming works better with a female vocalist (though sounding like something remixed by Error Operator). A resolutely downbeat EP that fits the gloomy, rainy weather but doesn’t quite convince.

Blurb: Eat More Cake are songwriter/producers Andy Briggs and Matt Pearn. Together they’ve created ‘Climb The Ladder, Live The Dream,’ a genre-crossing double-EP – part classic down-tempo, part electronica – complete with massive melodies, café del mar guitars and hip-hop beats. Eat More Cake, whose influences include Groove Armada, Massive Attack, Portishead and The Streets, formed in Harrow, North West London, in 2007. Songwriters Andy Briggs and Matt Pearn soon recruited a turntablist and drummer, and with a few guest vocalists on board, began writing what would later become ‘Climb The Ladder, Live The Dream,’ all the while, cutting their teeth on the London live circuit. Based on the band’s creative output of the last few years, along with tracks written as recently as late 2010, the double-EP was completed at the beginning of this year, and recorded using live instrumentation at Eastcote Studios, London by UK producer Richard Kayvan.
