Scanone – Gangsta Riddim EP

Claustrophobic dubstep EP from London’s Scanone, with free track to download.

There’s nothing beautiful in Gangsta Riddim’s world. This is digital dubstep with everything compressed into a claustrophobic world of numbed hallucination. Lead track Gangsta Riddom IDM sets the mood with its sparse beats and distorted sample. Strings ratchet up the tension and the bass booms in dark corners. Gangsta Riddim (Noel Funcken Remix) is the free download. And it’s no more cheerful. The beats are more broken and everything wades through a treacle of bass. Insider is a bit less heavy set but crawls around nagging at you like the inside of a nightmare. Utupia reflects not only dreadful spelling but a thankful lightening of mood as synths give us a cause to believe that not all is lost.

Blurb: Perhaps best known for his work on his own label Yellow Machines and his music released on Combat Recordings, Jude Greenaway aka “Scanone” is a London-based producer and DJ who has been making, playing and releasing music for over a decade. In that time he has managed to develop a sound that skirts around the lunatic fringes of a myriad of underground genres, from bass-heavy electro and techno to glitched-up IDM and techy, brooding, dubstep. Scanone’s intense new release on North Carolina’s Outside Recordings, entitled “Gangsta Riddim”, is a focused venture through an arctic digital scenery fused by heavy bass. While partly a homage to classic electro vibes, the 4 track EP draws heavily from modern influences including IDM, techno, and dubstep. Fans of artists such as Si Begg, Vex’d, Boxcutter, Ramadanman, and Mensah and labels like Planet Mu will feel very at home with the texture and aesthetic of this album.
