TEN AMBIENT CLASSICS No5: Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (1992)
This should be a compulsory item in all homes along with smoke alarms and comfortable beds. It’s so very good that it would be impossible to pick just one track, so let’s not. Richard James was barely out of his teens when this came out (flash bastard) and promptly blew away the competition with thirteen tracks of varying shades and moods, displaying an astonishing inventiveness and clarity that belied his then tender age. From the cheery, up-beat Pulsewidth and utterly danceable Delphium to the entrancing Xtal (which sounds like it was recorded in a cave) and the more twisted and surreal tones of Green Calx and Tha, this is unusual but quite wonderful stuff. From one of the truly original artists to emerge from that era. By way of Cornwall. Who’d have thought it?

I’ve got the Aphex Twin up today but ambient it ain’t. Lovely stuff.
Didn’t get the Aphex Twin for a while, and then…bang!
