Enigma Dubz – Genesis (Album)

Birmingham’s ENiGMA Dubz (James Vine) has produced some lovely dubstep tunes. Sustaining it through an album is something many dance artists find difficult. Listen to clips of the LP which is out today.

Occasionally, even in hindsight, I agree with myself. Like this from January on ENiGMA Dubz “His work encompasses a range of bass stuff, including some awful shouty ragga. But, for me, his best remix and original work concentrates on exploring the spaces opened up by Burial.” Which side will the LP focus on?

The 14-track LP (surely too many) opens with Can’t Spend The Day Without You. This has delicate piano and beats in a lushly romantic manner, partially offset by cool sub-bass. Shame about the cliched vocals, mind. Driving Home picks the pace up a bit with a liquid dnb approach and more piano.  Lovely. For Real goes for a skanking sub dub. Treacly. Genesis is another slowie with a slow warped dubstep bass that avoids cliche. Ladybird keeps it slow with digital R&B tinges. One Last Breath is synth central but feels a bit filler. Rogue Boy comes close to Burial territory before veering off into R&B garage. The Woods is full of odd noizenik sounds and is another in the filler category. Virtue brings things back on track with its crunchy beats and central synth motif. You’ve Been Gone returns to the lush romaticism of Can’t Spend The Day Without You.

Overall, this doesn’t push any boundaries but it is a really fine coherent LP if you want something lushly warmer than Burial’s nightbus drizzlescapes.

Enigma Dubz newest venture jets off where the massive “Hard 2 Smile EP” left off, Genesis can only be described as some of Enigma Dubz finest work. Enigma really steps it up a gear with this album and shows us his diversity as both a musician and writer, it takes heavy influence from enigmas garage roots but also shows a side to him what many of you may not of heard before. Jamie Vine aka Enigma Dubz has been one of LU10′s most consistent artists with his productions. Having had top 10 hits on beatport aswell as having over 5 million combined youtube hits.
