John Roman – Revisions002
Is it really two weeks since Revisions001 arrived. Seems so. Then, I raved about his reworking of hip hop and R&B tunes. This time he’s reworked/reinterpreted Missy Elliot and OutKast, neither of whom I particularly like. So, can he work his magic again? Free download.
“Read Between The Lines” is a revision of Missy Elliott’s “Miss E… So Addictive“. This ends up a sort of Detroit jazz house. Quite Carl Craig in its laid back way but with a stronger tech house flavour. Really good. Missy’s vocals are relegated to a whispered background sample. But the real revelation this time is ”Lightyears“, a revision of OutKast’s “Stankonia“. I don’t know the original track. But this ends up a hallucinogenic bit of slow, distorted techno. Quite brilliant. Utterly woozy. Utterly beguiling. This series is turning into a real classic effort. Can’t wait for Revisions003.
Blurb: REVISIONS is a 10-part free EP series by John Roman. Each track in REVISIONS is composed almost exclusively from a different Rap/R&B album from the last 15 years. With the exception of the odd 808/909, every melodic, percussive and atmospheric element in each track is created using its corresponding source album. Listen as Crunk is transformed into UK Garage, Pop-rap is warped to Deep House, and R&B is mutated to Industrial Techno… New REVISIONS EPs will follow every two weeks.
