Lane 8 – Dusty
You’ve got to be careful using classic tunes as samples. They can all too often overwhelm the rest of the tune or end up a cheap pastiche. Lane 8 is therefore treading dangerous ground in using Dusty Springfield’s Son of a Preacher Man for his new disco tune. Free download.
Lane 8 appeared here a few days ago. He calls this warm warmer disco, which is about right. There’s a bit of elastic disco bass, a loose limbed funk and 70s strut about it all. Using Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross and Pulp Fiction ought to be cliche central (!) but manages not to be, through the way that these distinctive vocals get chopped and treated so that they support the summer disco feeling. Ultimately a bit too disco for me but cleverly done.
