I Remember Getting Very Drunk: Miss Frenchie Interview Pt 2
Second part of our interview with GBYO early bootlegger Miss Frenchie.
6.Are there any bootlegs of yours that you think have withstood the test of time (don’t say, none)?
Probably “Fuck’em Boyo”, the one I did for the “London Booted” project.
“Going out with the Hives”, “Le Foxy Western”, “Message of choice” are others I still like to listen to.
7. You did a Superchunk for XFM as I recall. How did that come about?
To be honest, I can’t quite remember it was so long ago [2004]! I think ETM [Eddie Temple-Morris] emailed me and off we went!
I did go to the XFM studio to deliver it and record the interview. It was quite surreal and scary too as so many big names had done a Superchunk before!
8. Were you involved with the club Bastard? What was it like?
I did one guest appearance. Even back then, the fact that I was only DJ-ing with vinyl raised a few eyebrows! Still, the place rocked.
I also went to the night when DJ Zebra and Loo & Placido played. I remember getting very drunk and laughing a lot. The Asylum was a wicked little place and the GYBO people made it even more special.
9. It all seemed to exciting and vibrant in 2002/03 to hear mash ups. What marked the start of the end?
MTV Mash? Radio stations getting on the case? I’m not sure. Probably just the fact that the most talented people from GYBO moved towards bigger and brighter things. Then quality dropped. And the tools have become more accessible to everyone. Quantity productions with less quality.
10. And what is music’s role for you now?
DJ-ing. My first love. I had to put that on the back burner having to deal with “real life” but the internet has been great for sharing DJ sets regardless. I am hoping for a proper return behind the decks in 2013 down in Cornwall. Watch this space!
Download: Miss Frenchie – Superchunk (2004)
Acid Ted’s Note: I would have downloaded this on a 56k modem in 2004. It took 4 mins per meg. And this is 24.7mb! There’s dedication.
