I’m wary of posting this one. For starters, I’ve never heard Lana Del Ray’s music before (not knowingly) although I’ve seen her picture in the papers and read about some of the furore about her as ‘internet sensation’ / ‘internet fake’. That makes me ill-equipped to compare this to the original. Anyhow, enough apologia. This track has a slow, bass-heavy charm. And the vocals are chopped into submission. Listen only.

From an early release on Slam’s Soma Recordings, comes this 1994  track by Rejuvination, who comprised a couple of founders of Soma (more here). Their Introduction LP in 1995 was delicate glacial techno. This track predates that and precedes it in being a harder piece of techno offset to a limited extend by the strings.

Voxels’ biog on soundcloud goes on about unicorns, they witter about their style being batchelor house and their new single only comes with a 64 second clip. I was totally prepared to dismiss them. But this remix is too good to ignore. Where the original is perky harmonising for a totally unthreatening aspirational advert for light beer, the Voxels add in a sleazy underbass and warps the vocals in a way that destroys the domestic bliss. Dub techno from Robin Jacobs & Guba on Diametral Records. Free download.

Childcare responsibilities mean I need to keep this post short. A bumper pack of original and five mixes. All of the remixes groove away in a very Germanic dub techno manner. Unusually, the vinyl of this is out now. For the digital release you’ll have to wait until next month. But in the meantime, the whole thing’s been mixed down into a 35 min free download that works really well in its own right. Rather fine.

Blurb: After Sascha Walter’s “Glastank” and Fallhead’s “Instant Remix Files” Diametral Cube is smashing again with a really big remix package, this time based on the original “Weekender” by Robin Jacobs & Guba. Overall its a very dubby and dancefloor loving release with great grooves and very different interpretations. Kai Randy Michel, well known for his releases on Nachtstrom Schallplatten, is supporting this release with a great monotone and gloomy techno remix and beside with a great dub edit. Drumcomplex instead is forcing a little more into some techhouse styled beats with a great rolling groove. Plasmic Shape is presenting a nice fusion of dub and techno with that hypnotic loop character. Some more nice techhouse grooves coming from Stefan Mallmann already know from 3rd Wave and Night Drive Music. Last but not least Mago is closing this bigpack with some evolving glitch sounds and a subtile electrotech synth.

Theatre of Delays has remixed Sexy Boy from Air’s wonderful Moon Safari album. Free download.

Theatre of Delays says “I spent the whole summer listening to all of Air’s albums and when i saw that they were going to release a new album called: “A Trip to the Moon” i could not resist it any longer and had to remix the Classic “Sexy Boy” from the “Moon Safari” album.” The remix plays up the strings element of the original and generally ups the pace from sleaze lounge to a near progressive house feel. Nowhere near as heretical a concept as you might think. In fact, given my mixed feelings about the original I rather like this version.

Moody techno alert. And that’s good thing. Listen or buy.

The new EP from Fallhead is one of those too cool for school ones where there are no track names, just numbers. But that’s ok. This is minimal, dark techno all the way. Put on a grimace, turn off the lights and dance like The Long March. Maoist techno anyone?

It’s a themed EP, which is always a bit worrying. He describes it as “Genres to describe the tracks could be idm, breakcore, electronica“. The tracks are rather short and the whole thing is slightly sketchy as a result. The First Sight of Rain is a creaking slow IDM intro, followed by Warning Sirens which is much more in your face and feels like there’s a NIN fan lurkin in the background. The highlight of the EP is Escaping The Flood Pts I and II, which does a bit of an Aphex Twin by marrying some gentle ambient tones with a bit of distorted dnb.

I’m rather fond of Vince Watson’s melodic techno. He has a rather fine new EP out on Tresor at the end of the month. Annoyingly, clips for listen only. But an older track to download to make up for it.

Interference is a lovely piece of twisted, dark techno but without ever straying too far from the light. The Secret is Vince’s classic melodic techno, that could be as easily from 95 as now. The EP ends with The Secret (Melody) a near Japanese sounding piece of Kabuki manga soundtrack. Quality EP.
