Tracks from a couple more singles from the charity shop rummage – techno pop stars 2 Unlimited and Norman Cook alter-ego Freakpower.
The 2 Unlimited track is their 1993 smash hit “No Limits”. 2 Unlimited were founded by Belgian producers Jean-Paul de Coster and Phil Wilde. Their first success was “Get Ready For This” which got to No. 2 in the UK charts in 1991. Their second opus, “No Limits!”, was released in 1993. It’s popularity was such that no more than five singles were taken out of it. Among them, “No Limit”, now considered as a Eurodance classic. The decline of 2 Unlimited started soon thereafter, as their typical sound was reproduced by other Eurodance acts. Techno purists may claim to hate 2 Unlimited and the flood of acts following in their wake may have diluted the initial impact. But at the time even techno purists secretly liked them.
Freakpower is Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim, The Housemartins). The “Can U Feel It?” single is from 1996. Freakpower was formed out of the ashes of Norman’s previous venture – Beats International. He formed Freakpower with multi-talented brass player and vocalist Ashley Slater (from the cult UK funk band Microgroove) who was also a member of the Beats tour brass section and played brass on the Beats second album. The first album from Freakpower “Drive Thru Booty” in 1994 was mainly made from material Norman had written for a third Beats International album. They almost had a number one with ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’, after Levi’s Jeans picked it up to launch a multimillion dollar advertising campaign. The single has mixes from house legend Todd Terry and multi-talented Matthew Herbert in his Doctor Rockit guise.
