ESSENTIAL DANCE ANTHEMS 23 / 22

Two more from NME’s 25 Essential Dance anthems list. This time Josh Wink and Black Box.

23. Josh Wink – Higher State of Consciousness (1995)

NME says “Coming on like a Nintendo car that won’t start, the spiralling riff from Higher State of Consciousness was tribal techno’s finest hour.”

Yeah, I didn’t like it much either. But I know people generally do. Next.

22. Black Box – Ride On Time (1989)

NME says “Just after ‘Swing The Mood’ by Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers, and just before ‘That’s What I Like’ by Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers, the top of the UK charts was locked down for six weeks by a record that not only changed the musical landscape forever, it even changed the law. ‘Ride On Time’ was a misspelling of the sample from Loleatta Holloway’s 1980 disco hit ‘Lone Sensation’ (“‘cos you’re right on time”) which no-one had actually spoken to Ms Holloway about. Faced with a huge pot of money to be had, she sued and won. the law was subsequently changed to make it legally binding for artists to be credited on all releases. But let’s not allow the Old Bailey to obscure the general bangingness of ‘Ride On Time’. The highest-sellign single during Ye Olde Second Summer of Love (1989), it was dance’s coming-out party, the ‘Rock Around The Clock’ moment of the warehouse generation.”

D and I had a major diagreement about this tune. It was your typical dance snob vs popular music afficionado. D was complaining about the wailingness of the track and generally how awful it was. She’s so purist. Whereas I was acknowledging my inner diva and agreeing with NME about the bangingness of this tune. Classic.

And the list has got NME readers hot under the collar, with this being my favourite rant “If The Daily Mail compiled a ‘top 25 rave anthems’ list they would come up with something as way off the mark and completely ignorant as your list. Tori Amos? ATB? Eberneezer Goode? Groove Is In The Heart?! What did you base this list on – what got played on student nights at Cinderalla Rockerfellas in Solihull? Its the kind of ‘top rave anthem’ list you’d expect from a rose cheeked 18 year old public school girl on work experience for You Magazine. But from a music journalist?! Pathetic.”
