BEAT MINING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY WITH THE VINYL HOOVER

The odd title to this post is because it is inspired by one at Across The Kitchen Table dealing with a Radio 4 programme about crate digging and sampling. People like Coldcut and Steinski get the sampling props. They deserve it. But neither produced the ultimate in sampling. That was DJ Food.

Drew said that the programme had Coldcut giving a sample by sample run through of their groundbreaking remix of Eric B & Rakim’s Paid In Full. That made me think of sampling records I had. One from a few years ago was a history of cut ups which was a one-hour track called “Raiding The Twentieth Century”. This astonishing mix takes, cuts and splices music from across the twentieth century into the ultimate sample track with intermittent narration by Paul Morley. You need to listen to this.
