F IS FOR THE FIRE THIS TIME

Some conscious dub from seriously political group The Fire This Time.

The Fire This time was Michael Franti and Patrick Andrade. Michael was in The Beatnigs and political hip-hop group The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy with Rono Tse in the early 1990s and then in Spearhead. Patrick Andrade

The Fire This Time was founded by Pat Andrade and collects works from aboriginal cultures from around the world and presents the work in a political context. It operates as a loose collective of politically active hip-hop, reggae and techno artists dedicated to radical agitation and funky breaks.

They produced a single album “Dancing On John Wayne’s Head” in 1998 on Filter Records and three singles in the 1996-1998 period. The album title refers to the John Wayne cowboy image destroying the American Native way of life. And a single called “At Least American Indian People Know Exactly How They’ve Been Fucked” doesn’t leave much room for misinterpretation.

Michael and Patrick may have parted but The Fire This Time is still going. Still angry. The website says “Our aim is to provide a greater understanding of the struggles and triumphs of the various indigenous peoples and other freedom fighters like Assata Shakur. ….We live in an era where in the face of brazen arrogance on the part of amerikkka and its allies we need to be more defiant and creative than ever!!!”
