We move into 1994 for D’s selections today, with leftfield dance artists Renegade Soundwave and Depthcharge (J Saul Kane).

Renegade Soundwave – Renegade Soundwave (Leftfield Remix) (Mute 1994)
I was never a big fan of RSW, just couldn’t really get into them but this was different. What is, in my humble opinion, a perfectly pleasant rinky-dink tune is taken by the boys from Leftfield and transformed into a, frankly, quite awesome, six and a half minute wonder. Another slow starter that eventually builds up to a storming break that feels like its trying to tear down walls and flatten buildings, this still gives me a serious buzz every time I hear it. Much like ‘Loaded’, this is a remix that completely outshines the original and shows what can be done when you twiddle knobs correctly. As someone once said, a tune that makes you feel like you could spit in the face of God. [I think the RSW mixes are just great so I’ve added one for comparison – Ctel]

Depthcharge – Nine Deadly Venoms (1994)
Ooh! A whole long player this time. Yes, the wonderful and amusing world of J Saul Kane. I decided that picking just one tune from this was pointless really since the whole album is so damn fine. A great collection of samples spanning South American footie and moody kung fu films, all spread out over some very impressive sounds, this is still, I think, one of the funkiest and most original LP’s of the ’90s. And I can’t really say any more than that. Oh, yes I can. Another reason I liked this was that I always thought Kane looked like he’d be a great shag. That always helps. [Ahem! Anyway, you’re not getting the whole album. Buy it. You won’t regret it. Meanwhile, have top track Shaolin Buddha Finger and picture me in a club doing my old-man-having-a-seizure dance whilst D and X look on in helpless laughter – Ctel]
