NUMBERS: 808 STATE (4)

And finally for 808 State THAT classic and my favourite 808 State tune, from 1991, one that has probably the best sampled introduction ever.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you one of the great voices of the Twentieth Century, Alistair Cooke:

There are new forces in the world.

The conflict between the generations.
A powerful feeling that the American system is failing to deal with the real threats to life.
The bomb.
The pollution 0f air and water.
The population explosion.
The mounting slums.
…And crime.

808 State – In Yer Face (In Yer Face Mix)

808 State – Pacific State (Original)

PS: Nothing in this post should be taken as fact. It might not be Alastair Cooke. I thought it was but who knows. It’s all just opinion. Edit Oct 2011

  1. Hi there,

It has never been proved this is Alister Cooke as far as Im aware. No official comment from 808 state and no one can evidence the original piece.

If anyone can please reply. Till then no one knows where the sample came from. To me the voice isnt the same as Cooke at all (too slow) but it could have been manipulated in a sampler.

Id be very interested to know exactly where this came from with proof instead of internet hype where one person say’s it and the rest just follow. Not meaning to be rude.

  2. Kola – when I wrote this post I didn’t research whether it was Cooke or not. I had assumed it was Cooke when I first heard the record twenty years ago. I’ve since realised that no-one has found the excerpt and I’m mildly interested to know where it came from.

Hardly think my little blog counts as intenet hype, which is kind of rude whether meant or not.

  3. Hi there,

You have mis read me. Please let me clarify.

Some one says something as gospel on the net, such as yourself. re this quote. (I don’t see anywhere saying anything other than the quote IS from cooke)
Then others read that and spout that like it is a fact. Before you know it, it becomes accepted as such. Until someone questions the authenticity in this case myself.

Im honestly not meaning to be rude, but I worry mis-leading information like this becomes recognised as fact. I am a huge sentimentalist and saldy or not things, like this mean a lot to me.

I did not mean my comment to be read as your entire blog supports only internet hype and you exist souly to mis lead people, but you have to admit, in this post alone, you are releasing unsubstantiated opinions as fact for all to see.

I suppose if you own a blog it is your responsibility to ensure you are correct about what you say, wouldn’t you agree? Personally I don’t think the sample on the front of In yer face sounds like Cooke’s voice at all. But it would be wrong of me to state it isn’t Cooke as I just don’t know for sure.

Anyhow, were both on the same side really. If you do find out for sure where this has come from please let me know and I will do the same for you in return, even if its years down the line.

Ive been wanting to know (most likely like yourself) since I bought the record some 20 years ago.

  4. My responsibility is not to assume anyone other than a tiny fraction of the very small number of people visiting this site actually read this blog, as opposed to coming here simply to rip the music.

    This blog continues to decline.

    • And post amended. Happy now?!

    • Hey man,

You asking me if im “Happy now??” and flippant remarks on the original post?? hmmm, no, im not really happy to be honest, but hey its your blog and your professional standards I suppose.

Anyhow, I made my very fair and valid point.

Best of luck with the Blogg.

      • Fair enough on the flippancy. But I do try quite hard with this blog to get things right. But I don’t always manage it.
