REMIXING CLASSICS: 808 State – In Yer Face (Simon Harris 2011 Remix)

808 State’s 1992 classic In Yer Face gets a 2011 breaks makeover by the UK’s Simon Harris. Not a bad effort but also not entirely successful. The ominous, magisterial Alastair Cooke sample at the start has been moved to later on and either altered or re-recorded. The net effect is to make it a bit faster and younger sounding. This loses the impact of sample. The rest of the track is a good updating of the track with what was already a strong track given extra oomph from the breaks beats.

Bio:

Hi I’m Simon Harris, no not that one, but the one that’s “famous” for a really badly produced old skool record released in 1992 on Bhive Records – Logical Beats EP, http://www.discogs.com/Simon-Harris-Logical-Beats/release/314179 have had another piece of vinyl released on Paranoid Recordings in January 2011 (go buy it!) Only just got back into producing the old skool rave sound in the last year think I must be having a mid life crisis,I have all the signs I’ve got the young hot girlfriend, a car thats way too fast, a rapidly expanding waistline, wonderful kids that live with the ex, drink and smoke far too much for someone of my age and now really love listening to the same type of music I used to listen to as a teenager……….

  1. Hi mate cheers for the review! Couple of answers to your points.

I moved the intro speech further on in the track to give it a more DJ friendly intro, time for the DJ to get the tune mixed and ready to drop.

I hunted high and low for the Alistair Cooke sample, its from his Letters from America radio show, there were 2869 15 minute shows made making it the longest-running speech radio programme in history. Not all of the shows are available on the internet and even if they were it would have taken me 717 hours to listen to them all or in real money nearly 30 solid days. So I decided to remake the sample as best I could using a speech synthesizer.

If anyone can find me the sample to use instead I would love to have it !!!

  2. […] time, he remixed 808 State’s In Yer Face (here). And I grumbled about the Alatair Cooke sample being moved and re-recorded. Simon commented […]
