GOODBYE MR MACKENZIE – GOODWILL CITY
Goodbye Mr MacKenzie are more interesting to posterity than it seemed was the case at the time – with the Shirley Manson connection. Except to me. I had lots of their singles. But curiously none of their albums. Not sure why. They started in the mid-80s but the featured track dates from 1990.
Bio: The Mackenzies left behind the most complex and fascinating footprint of any Scottish Band. Lead singer Martin Metcalfe looked like the MC of a particularly debauched cabaret, rousing a troupe that included Shirley Manson who went on to front Garbage and Big John Duncan ex-the Exploited and a couple of Nirvana gigs. While their Scottish counterparts were looking at soul and Steeleye Dan for inspiration the Mackenzies were taking theirs from the Pixies and the Birthday Party.
From 1990’s Love Child limited edition 12″ comes this remix of previous year’s single Goodwill City by Terry Adams. Big bouncy chorus brought to the fore. Longer than the original but in no real sense a ‘dance’ mix.
