From January 2010:

Underground Resistance (often abbreviated to UR) is one of the seminal US techno labels, led by Jeff Mills and “Mad” Mike Banks. Sometimes unlistenable. Always challenging.

As Wiki says: They are the most militantly political example of modern Detroit Techno, with a grungy, four-track musical aesthetic and a strictly anti-mainstream business strategy. They have exerted their portion of Detroit Techno’s cultural influence towards promoting political activism. Begun in the late 1980s by Jeff Mills and “Mad” Mike Banks, UR related the aesthetics of early Detroit Techno to the complex social, political, and economic circumstances which followed on from Reagan-era inner-city economic recession, producing uncompromising music geared toward promoting awareness and facilitating political change. Later Robert “Noise” Hood joined the collective. As with Public Enemy, there have been intimations that UR’s subversively ‘militant’ approach to music was related to the activities of the Black Panthers in the 1970s, something Mills confirmed in an interview.

They describe their history thus: Since 1991, UR’s many live appearances (called assaults) worldwide have cemented the labels place in history. They were the first Detroit based act to actually play techno live and the first group to use a DJ as an actual bandmember! The shows are an exciting blend of man and machine. The bands skill, musicianship, disciplined manners and intelligent interviews have made them and the label some of the most respected ambassadors of “Detroit Techno” all over the world.

Their creed is: Underground Resistance is a label for a movement. A movement that wants change by sonic revolution. We urge you to join the resistance and help us combat the mediocre audio and visual programming that is being fed to the inhabitants of Earth, this programming is stagnating the minds of the people; building a wall between races and preventing world peace. It is this wall we are going to smash. By using the untapped energy potential of sound we are going to destroy this wall much the same as certain frequencies shatter glass. Techno is a music based in experimentation; it is music for the future of the human race. Without this music there will be no peace, no love, no vision. By simply communicating through sound, techno has brought people of all different nationalities together under one roof to enjoy themselves. Isn’t it obvious that music and dance are the keys to the universe? So called primitive animals and tribal humans have known this for thousands of years! We urge all brothers and sisters of the underground to create and transmit their tones and frequencies no matter how so called primitive their equipment may be. Transmit these tones and wreak havoc on the programmers!

UR – we created tomorrow and live in your imagination – we will never die
