jj – Beautiful Life (Atom Christie Remix)

Calling something ‘post’ anything is a worrying sign. It’s hipsters trying to move out of a genre before it goes mass market and uncool. Dubstep certainly apears to be suffering that fate. What sounded so fresh in its early Burial-era mix of ambient and 2-step got overtaken by enormous wobbling bass scattered in indiscriminate lumps over anything that moved. The mix of big brash electro with dubstep is everywhere, especially in stuff coming from America. And it is almost always awful.

Having Atom Christie come with a track with the genre ‘post dubstep’ was therefore worrying. I know nothing about jj and being a lazy blogger, I can’t be bothered to find out. But, thankfully, it’s not a dog’s breakfast of a tune. It is a surprisingly gentle, dubby thing. Has those slightly hellium vocals that Atom Christie seem to like. Add some echo and you get a bit of a winner.
