Culprit 1 – Part 2

The second part of the Culprit 1 interview and tracks from his new album – Solitude.

Culprit 1 is James Hannam from South Wales but based in London. He produces electronic music but has a strong classical influence. Today, we ask questions involving Latin American literature and Orbital, and we discuss recipes. Just your typical interview then.

4. What lay behind your Solitude album, beyond the title being taken from the Gabriel Garcia Marquez book? 

It was a desire to work entirely alone after making two vocal-focussed albums. I would like to work with singers again at some point, but this time around I had a strong yearning to return to my roots and make an album comprised entirely of of 3-4 minute instrumental tracks. The title of the album also refers to my desire to leave London, for reasons explained yesterday. I’m planning to get out within two years and move somewhere far quieter.     

 5. How did your remix for and by Paul Hartnoll come about? And did you get to meet him?

 The remix was commissioned by Paul’s label at the time, Kids Records. It was run by a chap called Dave Fawbert and he’d approached me after noting that I had listed Orbital as a major influence on the Culprit 1 MySpace page. I obviously jumped at the chance to work on a remix, but a huge bonus was that the track also featured Robert Smith of The Cure on vocals. It was a brilliant feeling to produce a remix for one of my childhood musical heroes and Paul returned the favour a few months later when he produced a stunning mix of my instrumental single ‘Tricks’.

 Following the remix swap, I was offered the chance to DJ at Paul’s London show in The Roundhouse theatre. I’ve met Paul several times since and was delighted when he and Phil started performing together again.   

6. The wife’s just bought Hugh Fearnley-Poshbloke’s Veggie cookbook. Can you suggest a veggie recipe we should try?

 I loved that series, particularly Hugh’s visits to random middle-class abodes for Sunday dinner. If meat fan Fearnley can go veggie (albeit for a relatively short period), then anyone can! His book is ace – my Mum received a copy for Christmas.

Culprit 1’s new album – Solitude – is available at iTunes, Amazon and Beatport. But also at Bandcamp. It starts with  2001 single Grains of Light which as I said yesterday has some trance chords which make me bristle unfairly. Atrapado is also from last year’s EP. It’s a spiralling piece of euphoric electronica. River Shifts marks the point where the album really takes off. A sense of freedom and abandon, with a strong breaks flavour. If Drums Could Have Spoken carries that theme forward, with a sound that almost mimics a whole band. The album may be called Solitude but it’s also about home. Wales. Exemplified by Waun Fach, the name of the highest mountain in the South Wales’ Black Mountains. This goes for a musical evocation of that mystical yearning which the Welsh call Hiraeth. Loops of Vapour brings it down to earth – but only a a bit – with an element of grittiness. Now is What Matters may be a title that’s fooling itself as it still has that sense of longing. After Dark is a much more urbanite track and consequently in your face. One of the best tracks on the album. The album ends with Newportonian – presumably after his home town Newport. It’s an element of a Coda to Grains of Light but also gives the album closure with it’s downbeat tones and touch tone blooping. An album that will repay repeated listens.
