50/Fifty Coming Up: #46 and #45

For this pairing you get two groups whose names get abbreviated to three initials – TGU and TPE.

At #46, Transglobal Underground with their 1991 should-have-been-a-hit Temple Head. More on TGU here. This track is a wonderful bit of singalong club music, with some winning piano. Even those addled on drugs could munter along to the nah nah nahs. I knew this track had been released twice in 1991 and 1993 on Nation and Deconstruction respectively. But what I hadn’t realised until I checked on discogs was that it had been released every year between 1991 and 1995.

Best bit: when it uses the film sample “Tell this to everybody, wherever they are. Watch the skies, everywhere, keep looking. Keep watching the skies.” – The Thing (1951)

At #45, TPE or That Petrol Emotion and their 1990 single Hey Venus in its Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Mix version. More on That Petrol Emotion here. TPE was another group that came from indie rock into dance. This track does sound a bit dated, with the funky drummer shuffle and bongos but box-fresh for the 90s revival. D does, however, take issue with this track as being indie, not dance. In my defense, I do think this particular mix is much more dance than indie.

Best bit: the scream at 1.40
