50/Fifty Coming Up: #44 and #43

IMG_0805

At #44 and #43 a couple of tracks that may have had more than a little something to do with drugs.

#44 is The Joy and their 27 minute version of Shine (Hyperphoria Mix). This 1994 track has a lot in common with Amorphous Androgynous’ psychedelic approach. The Joy were: Denise Johnson (vocals), Gavin O’Neill (vocals), Andy Tracey (guitar), Ali Fletcher (drums, percussion and programming) and David Tolan (bass, percussion and programming). More here, including about the track and its Lee Perry and Pink Floyd influences. It’s sprawling nature feels like an LSD trip writ large and its “shine, shine on” lyrics have a saucer-eyed sense of wonder.

Best bit: when the shards of guitar come in at 2.40.

#43 is Sandals and We Wanna Live, released in 1992. Sandals were Will Blanchard, John Harris, Derek Delves & Ian Simmonds. This record makes it because it mixes the Sandals’ heavy, druggy grooves, with a production by Ashley Beedle and David Holmes (as the Disco Evangelists). And if that wasn’t enough they were assisted by Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns for Sabres of Paradise. A veritable who’s who of early 90s UK dance. What made Sandals’ work stand out was the heavy drum patterns, with an organic sound. Like the best squat party you never went to. More here.

Best bit: the tabla at 0.24, providing a respite from the heavy intro.

  1. Good stuff, both tracks. Although The Joy one does go on a bit.
