REMIXING CLASSICS: Underworld – Rez (Bassnectar Remix)

rez

Before we get to #2 and #1 on Coming Up, here’s a 90s classic from Underworld given a contemporary remix by Bassnectar. Includes a vinyl release.

I don’t want to get all precious or anything. OK, I do. There’s a huge risk here in messing with such a distinctive tune – and, let’s be honest, messing with my past. America’s Bassnectar’s work isn’t the subtlest and too often overloads the bass for me to feature on Acid Ted. I therefore approached this with some wariness. But he turns out to be a good choice. This tune is pretty full on in its original form and Bassnectar is equal to revamping it. He keeps the delightful acid squiggling at the start and the widescreen drums. It does have a bass-driven approach throughout and some use of dubstep-style bass but nothing that upsets the grandeur of the tune.

Blurb: Widescreen bass music for the soul – as last heard in Lorin’s NYE set, ushering in 2013 in explosive style. Coming Feb 12th on download and 180-gram vinyl.

  1. Well, as a member of the pink vinyl club and having been at the Gardening Club witnessing Darren Emerson absolutely wrench the admittedly low roof off with the original of this I was Very trepid when this popped up on the blogosphere a couple days back. The original is a simple ageless classic of deceptively immense depth and power and basically is best not f**ked with. Bassnectar has and to his credit made it his own. I really like and regularly play out his remix of Walk Like an Egyptian but with the exception of some cool bar slicing in the last third it kinda leaves me a bit cold. However if it gets a wider audience and those switched on enough to check the original do so then so much the better.

  2. Hmmm. This is not my new jam

  3. No!
