PHIL KIERAN RECORDINGS “SERIES 2”
Sometimes doing this blog feels like an enormous exercise of sorting the wheat from the chaff, with extra grain added faster than I can ever hope to sort. That does mean I’m more likely to go for names I recognise. Belfast’s Phil Kieran is one.
His work usually means quality dance music with a welcome techno slant. The release of his Series 2 was therefore an excitement. But also a partial let down. The tracks are good. It’s great dance floor music. But, it’s also slightly pedestrian. There’s nothing terribly memorable about it. Even the saintly Justin Robertson (in his Deadstock 33s guise) can’t work any magic.
Why post then? Well, in a wheat/chaff moment, I got to Phil Kieran & Green Velvet Bird & Bees Hardway Bros Rmx and everything felt worthwhile. Hardway Bros have been around since the 90s. It’s Sean Johnston alongside Jake Davies and a mysterious South Londoner known only as Rico. This remix takes things rather away from 4/4 and into something a little samba and all round funky. This shakes its hips in a most beguiling way.
