Till death

Till Death is not a track it’s a suite. It’s a 16 minute piece from Static Shock which draws on people like DJ Shadow, The Avalanches and Coldcut in its psychedelic hip hop jazz vibe, with a disorientating set of samples taken from old records and found sound. I’m not normally one for this sort of thing – I’m not sure I have ever bought a DJ Shadow album. But this has a cleverly laid back air that maintains a lazy hip hop beat whilst the samples cascade around. Free download via bandcamp.

Blurb: Clocking in at just over sixteen minutes, Static Shock’s ‘Till Death’ suite is one cohesive track that utilizes a variety of curated sounds to create a unique aural landscape. The project has many influences – producers like DJ Shadow, Madlib, and Cut Chemist – early rap – the 90’s in general – musique concrete, and memory. Many of the samples come directly from Static Shock’s late grandparents’ record collection – they both recently passed away, and left him a treasure trove of old vinyl – jazz, big band, blues, comedy, etc. to work with. The ‘Till Death’ suite was produced as one solid track so that listeners can absorb the entire thing in one sitting – it is intended to be one cohesive listening experience, not chopped up into bits and pieces.
