There’s an element of awkwardness in The Conservatory Experiment’s new album Europa. There’s much to enjoy here but sometimes the different elements sit uneasily with each other. Free download.
Opener, Making Waves is a generously synthed piece of electronica that gets the album off to a good start. The jazz-inflected The Open Road gets a pleasantly head nodding response. The transition to the drum and bass of Large Colonies In Space is just about soft enough to manage. But then the awkwardness. Reggae Number 1 comes out like an embarrassing Pink Floyd loving uncle trying to be hip. There’s guitar yowling ambient cod reggae. The dub’s not full enough to save it. And there’s no saving the transition back into the IDM flavoured but rather good Yannick’s Nightmare. Of the rest, go for Grinder and Oceans of Europa and avoid Andean Chill.
