Herd The Shadows
This is really quite an exciting post for me, though I fully expect it to go un-read. It marks the return of Tauchsieder with their Herd The Shadows EP. Not only that, it’s available on vinyl and is the first release on the new Castles In Space label. A proper double whammy.
Tauchsieder first. Meaning immersion heater, this was the combination of Stuart McLean (Frenchbloke), Ben Hayes (Soundhog) and Innes Smith (Cnut), with a little vocal support from Wire’s Colin Newman. They released the wonderful Louder LP in 2007 to no acclaim whatsoever.
After a gap of eight years they have snuck back and released Herd The Shadows EP. The reasons for which are given in this typically awkward Q&A. Herd The Shadows originally appeared on the Louder LP. Stuart explains “It’s original title was “the length of a song by the band called Wire” at just over two minutes-ish – the title was terrible and Colin changed it accordingly. It has no set tempo with the main noise being altered by changing from one resonator bank to another – the bass being played live over it. It’s been remastered for vinyl for this Castles in Space release.”
Herd The Shadows is a typically Tauchsieder ambient drone with Colin Newman singing/talking along. This is music as mood. Reverse The Shadows takes things to a darker place and ups the drone. Moves Left is the nearest thing to optimism that this trio of tracks has. There’s a little synth burble and a bit of a KLF-ish talking in the background. This positively thrums with energy. A perfect gift for the grouch in your life.
