2Pac – Changes (Shemce Remix)

Changes is the only 2Pac record I own. Was never a fan of 2Pac but on this track I love the lyrics and use of the Bruce Hornsby sample. But why remix a track released in 1998 with a vocal recorded in 1992?

Thought I ought to ask Shemce to explain. He says “I was actually in a real awful mood after the shooting at Roseburg. On top of that, all the attention that police brutality has been getting – I just felt like the world was f*cked up. Then the lyrics of this track popped into my head . . . how some things never change. But then after listening to the original again, 2Pac says “we aint ready to see a black president” – well we finally have; and then that gave me hope.” He adds “I hope to be able to use music as a platform for change one day; but for now, the remix was my heartfelt attempt at bringing his words back to life and to a new audience.”

Taking such a recognisable track and giving it a house makeover is quite a thing to do. It ends up pacier, less angsty and more hopeful. Which given what Shemce says seems a pretty good outcome to me. Free download.
