The Non-Functional Saints – 17

Well, well, well. Bright post-election morning in the UK. A hung Parliament. Didn’t see that coming. Seems only apt to feature Between The Houses from the Non-Functional Saints which has a similarly hung stance between post-rock sounds and dance influences.

Between The Houses is part of the Non-Functional Saints’ debut 17 EP. It’s a track that has found sound and a sense of its own fragility. Repeated piano and soft guitar gives it a post-rock edge, while the background electronics and faraway hubbub have an ambient air. A delicate beauty of a track.

As for the other tracks, Make Me Welcome adds slightly dubbed vocals to the mix and an electronic buzz. Comes over quite indie dance. Make Me Human is a more conventional post-rock track. A bit too lighters-in-the-air for me. Make Me Get returns to the buzzing electronics and dub. This more awkward approach is rather fine. Closer To Come Home is equally good, with its spoken vocal, multi-tacked choir and crushed electronics.
