Sunday trip hop from Osiris and Pablo Zuazo #triphop #jazz #hophop #electronic

Back to a chilled Sunday with Osiris and Pablo Zuazo. There’s shades of Portishead and Thievery Corporation here.

America’s Osiris first. Prime Directive is a brilliantly chilled track, with extra hip swinging action from the drums. This is described rather perfectly as “Soul Sampling with some Electronic sound design influence in a vacuum atmosphere.” There’s a mix of Aretha Franklin warped jazz and some samples from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The samples may be largely familiar but sound thrillingly chilling in this new setting where the tinkling piano sits against scratching and punchy drums. The track is taken from the forthcoming album Reincarnation.

Next, Brazil’s Pablo Zuazo and something a touchy more jazz lounge with extra samba on Macaco Nu Jazz. This does have a scent of Thievery Corporation and I love them. At only two minutes this is frustratingly short but is expertly crafted. Nu jazz is all too often blandness personified. Not so here. The beats have a crispness that provides the track with a solid centre, allowing the organ to wander free with just a few vocal elements floating around for extra ethereal appeal. Wonderous.
