The Surrealist — KALEIDO #electronic #ambient #electronica #postrock
OK. I’m going to say something potentially unpopular. U2. There. I’ve said it. This track – Kaleido – from The Surrealist really reminds me of U2’s Wire (dub) from 1984. There are the tense high guitar strings, the taut almost minimal funk approach. And it’s good. Really good.
The Surrealist are Roopam Garg and Austin Rockman from the US. There’s a certain archness about them as evinced by their bio which says “Born in the college town of Boston, Massachusetts. The project is composed of guitarist Roopam Garg and sound designer Austin Rockman. Their two minds serendipitously merged upon graduating from Berklee College of Music.” They’re welcome to be as arch as they like if they’re prepared to produce music as wonderous as Kaleido. It’s a deeply layered mix of chords and strings and things. It’s all taut and tense and slightly ethereal and orgiastic. A post rock electronic blend that makes them wonderfully special.
