Hero returns: John Beltran – Childhood Memories #electronic #ambient #newmusic

John Beltran is one of those US electronic artists that hasn’t been constrained by specific genres, though it’s his more downtempo work that’s always appealed to me. He’s from Michigan and has been making music since the mid-90s, initially on Carl Carig’s label.

He’s back with a new track Childhood Memories taken from the Pure Sounds of Michigan ambient compliation album. This is an unashamedly nostalgic track. It blends ambient electronics, found sound and post-rock approaches. He says “I’m of Spanish, Mexican and Puerto Rican decent. I’ve been blessed to live and travel many places around the globe but Michigan is my one and only love.” Adding, “I grew up here, I live here now and plan on being here forever. It has always played a role in my music and each season is an inspiration all its own.”

The track has a sepia tinted hazy flow of reverb and the sounds of children playing and church bells ringing in the far distance. A post-rock electronic emotional trip down memory lane. A time when the shine always shines and the days are warm and long. The mood is an electronic drone that time stretches everything until the moment is almost frozen in amber forever. Lovely.
