Classic redux: Rocco Rodamaal feat. Keith Thompson – Break 4 Love

It’s with some trepidation that I approach remixes of changes of classic tracks. And in dance music’s late 80s canon there’s a special place for Raze’s Break 4 Love. Released in 1988 it encompasses all of dance’s debt to disco, positivity of the lyrics and the forward looking nature of the beats and total package.

And yet dance music has always cannibalised its past. Sampling and reinterpreting is in its very dna. The original track was written by Vaughan Mason but rested as much on the vocals from Keith Thompson and Bobby Coleman. And it’s Keith Thompson who has worked on the remix. Yeah, it obviously brings the vocals to the fore. But that’s actually great. Gives a soulful warmth against which the machine music and beats can do their thing. A classy house reminder for a new generation about respecting their history. Superb stuff.
