Return of the genius: Carl Craig – Free At Last #Techno #Classical #Electronic

My musical heroes are all British. With one exception. Carl Craig. He is one of the second wave of techno from Detroit that came in the late 80s and early 90s. His work has a beauty and a precision that is unmatched.

And he’s back with a track for Coronavirus times on the Music Activists 2020 (At Home) compilation on the InFinĂ© label. They describe themselves as delivering “Easy music for the hard to please.” And that’s what you get here.

The track is Free At Last which offers endless ambiguous possibilities. It offers MLK resonances, freedom from lockdown or even a darker free from earthly constraints connotation. The track is Carl classic mix of electronic loops that flirt round the edge of Detroit techno alongside more classical references with lots of almost strings. But these are kept in check to create a tension that wants to break free and soar. But it can’t. It keeps coming back to earth. Back down. A beautiful piece of home raving that deserves lots of space in which to be heard. An anthemic addition to our strange times.
