Synth star surprises: Jean-Michel Jarre – Herbalizer #Synth #Synthwave #Electronic

Sometimes life brings surprises. Some are good and some less so. My son breaking his foot yesterday the latter but JMJ’s new work the former.

Jean-Michel Jarre has been around forever it feels like. I still have a love for his 1976 smash Oxygene but had parked him in the bin marked ‘old stuff I no longer listen to.’ I therefore approached this track from his forthcoming Welcome To the Other Side with some scepticism. That it was recorded on New Year’s Eve, “from a virtual reality Notre-Dame cathedral” seemed a Gallic conceit destined to fail. But blow me if the track is really rather good and punchy.

Herbalizer is the track. It opens, perhaps inevitably, with a faux classical overture. But then along come some properly funky beats. And then the whole thing takes off. It’s a bit Alex F in places. But that is a stone cold classic. It uses that 80s platform to properly get into a more contemporary space with a real punch of bass and beats. The track has pace and verve and energy. A delicious rush proving there’s life in the old chien yet.
