Conscious music from: Fold – Aphelion: a tribute to Lorraine Hansberry

Here’s a chance to have a listen to a pre-release of the new album by Leeds-based Fold. They’ve appeared here a few times before with their highly political but jazzy and funky downtempo sounds. All of that is here in spades on new album Aphelion.

Aphelion is the point in the orbit of an object when it is furthest from the sun. Fold say, “Metaphorically speaking, the world of today feels further from the light than ever before.” The album is pitched as a tribute to Lorraine Hansberry. TBH, not someone I’d heard of before Fold’s 2020 single Concrete Things. The blurb accompanying the album offers, ““Largely defined by her trailblazing play A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry died in 1965 at the age of thirty-four. A prolific and probing artist, she was also one of the most radical, courageous, and prescient artist-intellectuals of the twentieth century—and one of the least understood.” — Imani Perry”

As for the music it’s a jazzy funky sixties influenced affair. Brass parps out. There are sounds from around the world. Jazz, Latin America and elsewhere. The politics are heavy and necessary but the tunes are light and fleet of foot.

The album’s out on 17 October.
