REPOST: E IS FOR EMPIRION

From February 2009:

Empirion produced one of the techno classics of the mid-90s. But this comes from a EBM, industrial, rave background. Perhaps.

Epirion was Oz Morsley, Bobby Glennie & Jamie Smart. They were signed to XL Recordings in 1995 but by then had already released their classic record. The group folded by 1997, suffering from an inability to repeat their early success and from not fitting into any one category of dance music. Narcotic Influence was originally released on their own label – Wanted Records – in 1993 but was re-released on XL in 1996. I don’t know if it got re-recorded or remastered but the XL release never sounded quite as good as the original release. Bob Glennie recalls “When we had Narcotic Influence pressed up we had a run of 500 copies and got back to the house and though ‘what the hell are we going to with all these?’ then it just went from there. Before the re-issue at the beginning of the year [1996] we had sold 5000″.

On its notorious sample of “Giving them drugs. Taking their lives away” Bob said “we’ve been through the scene and we’re still doing it now but you started off with a lot of friends and seen some of them mess their lives up. Have respect for yourself and do what you are doing but you mustn’t let it take your life over. People can take what they like from the record and even if its just making people stand back for a second”. Think on that while you have the original release, crackles and all:
