Ambient Sunday with Broken Nomads, and added chill from dopeman x Daddy Who

Another post in which two Acidted favourites return. This time it’s the turn of Broken Nomads, and dopeman.

Broken Nomads are Yugambeh and Ouwle, a Swedish ambient/downtempo duo formed in Karlstad during the summer of 2021. They were last here a mere month ago. Now they’re back with their third single Nevermore.

Last time they were on a journey across 90s ambient. This time they’ve set their sights higher. This is ambient that’s epic, or perhaps cosmic might be a bit more accurate.

They describe Nevermore in surprisingly workmanlike terms, “With Nevermore, we started to find our sound: a steady beat and melody that drive the slow downtempo song forward, assisted by warm synth bass, pads and drones.” And that’s all accurate but fails to impart the emotional resonance here.

Nevermore is an intro of floating synths that have a drifting in space feel. Then a bass line arrives to give things a more portentous momentum. A seriously epic sound swells. It tiptoes around orchestral swells and drones but the blips and bloops keep this firmly electronic.

Ambient for the ages, for all eternity. Evermore, not Nevermore.

dopeman from Germany returns with another collaborative effort. This time it’s Daddy Who on Some Call It Nostalgia. Daddy Who says “My beats are very simple and shaped by the sound of my childhood and cassettes…” The track is taken from the collaboration album The Great Adventures of Dopedaddy.

Some Call It Nostalgia is a sentimental track. There’s a classic film sample and the beats are solidly old school hip hop. A bit of Wah Wah guitar for that sixties touch.

There’s a swirl of brass and some keening background vocal elements to make this a total tug at the heart strings. But it’s perfectly pitched to sound both throwback and totally contemporary.
