IDM delights with Spirograph – Onwards

Blame Canada. No really, but do enjoy Canada’s Spirograph with some lovely light IDM on Onwards.

Spirograph is Gord Westmacott. He’s a radio producer for CBC Radio in Toronto, Ontario. That makes Spirograph his side hustle, I guess. And rather good it is too.

Onward is his new single. It’s from the forthcoming third Spirograph album, Stepwise which will be released on 2 August.

Onward is quite a 90s flavoured track. It has bits of Aphex Twin and lots of Boards of Canada as reference points. It’s that sort of IDM which is totally electronic but has an organic feel about it.

The beats have the right sort of tippy tappy feel for IDM. They sit alongside a background kinda acid squiggle that enhances that electronic, alien edge.

Meanwhile some synth organ chords parp away both melancholically and cheerily, all at the same time. There’s a bit of spaciness and a welcome wooziness.

One of those tracks that has lots of good things going on and leaves your day 14% better than it was before. Go grab your 14%.
