NEW MUSIC: SERGE DEVANT – 3AM ETERNAL (KLF COVER)

Cover versions, like remixes, are tricky beasts. If you’re going to attempt one, you have to do something different from the original. You either have to turn everything up to 11 to make it a souped up version, like Fatboy Slim’s remix of Brimful of Asha, or you have to make it identifiably your own, like Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt. If you’re going to do something that’s pretty faithful to the original, what’s the point? We might as well play the original.

This sparked by news that Serge Devant has remixed KLF’s classic 3AM Eternal. I’m always up for remixes of KLF’s stadium trilogy – they did so many themselves. There are a number of good ones that find something new. For example, Slusnik Luna’s version of Last Train To Trancentral which turns it ito a proper trance monster. But this version disappoints. It claims much but delivers something that it a fairly faithful version of the original, with a little modern pumping.

Serge Devant feat Taleen – 3AM Eternal (long version)

Blurb: Rising NYC-based DJ/producer/remixer Serge Devant offers a tease into his forthcoming new Ultra Records artist album with a remix of one of the most iconic tracks in dance music history, The KLF’s “3AM Eternal.” Serge Devant’s remake resurrects 3AM Eternal with his pure elements and energy, while successfully capturing the aura of its time. The track builds intensity through its huge anthem breakdown, which showcases KLF’s vocals and delivers us into pure 80′s bliss with a twist. Even the album art is a throwback to the KLF original! Released earlier this summer – Serge Devant feat. Taleen “3AM Eternal” – debuted at #11 on the UK Buzz Charts and #20 on Music Week’s Cool Cuts Chart. One of the hottest tracks of the festival season, it continues to build momentum and has now made its way to #5 on the Cool Cuts chart for the week ending July 16. It’s been 20 years but “3AM Eternal” is back at the top of the charts and Serge’s version is destined to bring this classic sound to a new audience.

Out now on Ultra Records. Buy it here. https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/release/detail/371990/3AM%20Eternal

  1. I read the post title and thought… no… then I read your description and still thought… no… but I’ve now had a listen and.. ok.
My left hand speaker may never recover from that bass by the way.

There’s always a danger that these things end in a road crash but he’s been respectful to the original and not really changed it that much.
