TEN AMBIENT CLASSICS No4: Future Sound of London

Future Sound of London – Lifeforms (1994)

Christ, where do you even start with this? A landmark album, even by the standards of the day, which means you can only really elect to advocate the entire work as essential listening. Layer upon layer of beats and noises, rhythms and speeds, urban and rural, animal and human and so much more, this is a huge canvas that feels as if it’s capturing all the sounds of life, a blending of natural and man-made, creating an unpredictable yet seductive atmosphere that seeps into your mind. A veritable smorgasbord of samples and soundtracks, breathtaking in its scope and boldness and a wonderful example of imaginations running riot. Notwithstanding the release of Cascade and Lifeforms as singles, this is a record best listened to as a whole, in my humble opinion, as snippets here and there don’t do it the justice it deserves in its entirety. Quite simply, marvellous.

  1. The FSOL essential mixes were amongst the best ever done. I just get so wrapped up when listening to their stuff. Magic
