HiFi Brown – My Own Nothing
This arrived low-key and unannouced from HiFi Brown. But it is great. Sparkling synths twinkling like a night sky. Nu disco goodness.
HiFi Brown is from Berlin but doesn’t disclose much more than that, so I thought we’d try Ted’s Top Ten Quiz on him:
1. Weatherall or Oakenfold?
i just read the wiki on both – both are not my cup of tea – so i have to go with weatherall!
even so i appreciate the pop-appeal that surrounds oakenfold. my question would be more like: depeche mode or duran duran – and it would be a tough one to answer.

2. Real instruments or synthesisers?
i used to play the piano and the drums – but living in berlin – you get a lot of history about synthesisers. for some of my friends synthesisers itself is a whole religion – but i guess we will get there with question #9.

3. Beer or coffee?
i was diagnosed with attention deficit syndrome – and uppers would calm me down – so i never drunk coffee in my life. and i had a bicycle accident, when i was drunk – so i try to minimize my beer consumption.

4. Unter den linden or Potzdammer Platz?
They are both very touristic locations – but at least @ potsdamer platz i can hide into the cinemas – there is no better place than a comfy chair in a dark room and watching loud moving pictures.

5. Berghain or E-Werk [Berlin clubs]?
I’ve never been to e-werk – it was closed or commercially re-open, when i was living in berlin. – wait – now i remember – i was at the re-opening night at the e-werk – sven väth djed in the basement – it was kinda sad. – the darkrooms at the berghain are scary and fun – unbeatable.

6. Paul Kalkbrenner or Paul Van Dyk [Berlin-based DJs]?
i used to be a dj with another moniker: Maarten Clark. i played paul kalkbrenner as well as paul van dyk. paul van dyk is by far a better producer and he is more the professionell one – paul kalkbrenner was lucky to get the lead in berlin calling – otherwise i guess he wouldn’t be that special – but kalkbrenner always has a nice hypnotic groove – personally i like the music of paul kalkbrenner more than paul van dyk.

7. Pfannkuchen or Currywurst [Berlin culinary delights]?
if there is a lot sugar on that pancakes – i will go with the sweets! if i’m coming out of the berghain – i need a currywurst.

8. Digital or vinyl?
i used to be a vinyl-dj – keep it real and all that stuff. but it’s so .. such a drag. i wasn’t able to move in berlin for years, because of 5.000 vinyl – it’s a pain. as maarten clark i switched more and more to digital – Now i’m a fan of CDJ! digital is better.

9. 808 or 303?
i wish i would know more about these machines. i really wish – but as i see that my friends are getting really mad talking about these kind of stuff – i’m gonna respect that and build my expertise more in movies/tv-shows. i sample a kickdrum from paul van dyk if i need one 😉

10. Eminem vs Nena or german experimental loop orchestra [both other things he’s done in the past]?
GELO is in fact only the solo-project of my friend – but we’ve been together as FOTOMATON making analog-noise-drone (we called it “ambient punk”). and it was exactly the same time when “eminem vs nena” happened. i learned a lot about the “business” as what happened to me because of “EMINENA”. i grew up with pop-music from the 80ies – and there is also no difference or decision to make. for me it’s kinda in a way like south park (eminem vs nena) and david lynch (german experimental loop orchestra). i’m always in the mood for south park.

And so to My Own Nothing from the Cancer album (star sign not disease reference, if anyone’s wondering). This is a lovely nu-disco tune but with a really strong scuzzy bass synth underpinning to complement the light twinkly stuff going on up top. highly recommended.
