50/Fifty Coming Up: #22 and #21

IMG_0319

PWEI and The Shamen today.

At #22 is Pop Will Eat Itself and their dance rock hybrid Karmadrome, a single taken from 1992’s The Looks or the Lifestyle? LP. This single even got into the proper top 30. It’s a reminder of the marvellous day-glo frenzy that were the Poppies. I loved them and this is my favourite, just edging out Adrian Sherwood’s work on Bulletproof.

Best bit: When the Karma choral comes in at 1.00

At #21 a remix of the track that both made and, ultimately, broke The Shamen (more here). It is of course their #1 smash Ebeneezer Goode. However, I’ve gone not for the Richie Hawtin versions which take an acidic path but for the Meat Beat Manifesto (Jack Dangers) version in its instrumental form. This is a crash of drums and spooky theramin to hurl yourself around to.

Best bit: those clattering mbm drums.

It was a close call and I nearly went for this Oakenfold mix instead:
