50/Fifty Coming Down: #12 and #11

Nicolette and Mental Generation this morning.

At #12 is Nicolette and No Government. This track is taken from 1996’s Let No-One Live Rent Free In Your Head. It’s probably best-known for the 2007 remix by Tocadisco but that’s a bit too cheesy. It’s the original for me. What makes this is the mix of restrained beats and Nicolette’s sultry, rich vocals.

At #11 is the track Cafe Del Mar. Now, most people tend to think of the Energy 52 track at this point, which has been the subject of umpteen remixes, like this one from Deadmau5

But I’m talking about the Mental Generation version which was released in 1993. This got a 12″ remix pack from Underworld in 1996, who took it in a sprawling ambient trance direction with hip hop dub beats.
