REMIXING CLASSICS: Golden Girls – Kinetic (Kraak & Smaak Remix)

kinetic

A classic techno track from 1991 gets a remix.

This track is one of those that has confused me previously. So, let’s run what I think I understand and you tell me if I’m right. Kinetic was first released in 1991 by Mike Hazell as The Pied Piper. The tune was co-produced by Paul Hartnoll of Orbital. It’s therefore unsurprising it has some very Orbital sounding chords. The tune then gets released as being by Golden Girls the following year. But I’ve no idea why the name change. Orbital then go on to use some of the tune in their track Frenetic, which is why I always think of this as an Orbital tune. Make sense?

The remix is by Kraak & Smaak, Dutch producers Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug, who take the techno original into a more garargey place with the stabbing synths and vocal sample. It’s not until the three minute mark that they start to allow the classic synth riff unfold. Have to admit that this is not an improvement on the original. Makes it into a standard cheesy house tune.

And here’s a classic remix from Frank De Wulf from the R&S release in 1992

And, Orbital’s Frenetic

Blurb: It’s been over 20 years since Orbital teamed up with Mike Hazell to form Golden Girls and release one of the undisputable club classics of the ecstasy generation – Kinetic.  The riff is so recognisable and always raises a cheer. It has been remixed numerous times over the years as each new generation gets to hear it for the first time with a slightly new flavor to make that riff sound so right in DJ’s current sets. This time Kraak & Smaak step up to the plate with a 90’s garage inspired remix that slowly morphs into the most recognisable riff in rave. Supported by Tensnake, Jesse Rose and Hot Since 82 this is a sure fire winner. Next up Jeremy Olander – this mix started off as a bootleg that we heard Eric Prydz dropping and quickly became part of the official package. Big room and festival badness beckons for this beauty. Finally Floorplay regulars Grant Nalder & Adam Asenjo drop a mix that is perfect for house and tech house DJ’s. You’ll know it when you hear it….

  1. […] had a remix of this track by Kraak & Smaak a few days ago. That was pretty uninspiring, so can Swedish producer Jeremy Olander do […]
