Win Soma Compilation ’21′ – Mixed by Gary Beck

SOMACD103-WEB-ARTWORK

A reminder that you could win a copy of the new Soma compilation 21, with some stonkingly good tunes – there’s a review from D below. I’ve two copies to give away. All you have to do, in the immortal words of announcers everywhere, is to answer this simple question:

Q: Which Daft Punk track appeared on the first Soma compilation (SOMA CD001)?

It’s pretty much a given that, on listening to a new record, the volume at which I listen will increase in tandem with my aural satisfaction. Or not, as the case may be. By the time this finished, my eardrums were throbbing and my contentment was maxed out. It’s not often this happens and it’s a testament to this fine collection of tunes that it did.

Mixed by techno stalwart, Gary Beck, this opens with Deepchord’s uber chilled ‘Tonality of Night,’ the spaced out, muted beat, reverberating synth and white noise lulling one into a false sense of mellowness before seeping nicely into Joe Stawartz’s ‘M17 (Ambivalent’s Byways Remix), again chilled but edgier, darker, an indication of tunes to come. And come they do. The change in tone is heralded by Heiko Laux and Steve Rachmad’s ‘The Viking,’ a vibrant, no nonsense beat punctuated by short, sharp buzzes of synth work that quicken the pace.

Upping the ante further is Claude Von Strokes mix of ‘Mothership Connection,’ a pleasingly insistent melody and beat, laced with a funkiness carried over into Mark Henning’s contribution, ‘You’re Digging Into Me,’ its twanging bass and ricocheting percussion urging you to move. The intensity peaks with Pig and Dan and Mark Reeves ‘Origami,’ Mark Reeves ‘Dice,’ which possesses a delightfully deep, dirty bass throughout, Gary Becks ‘Algoreal,’ and Alex Under’s ‘Addendum’ all pumping those heavy, uncompromising beats of the 3am-heads-down-eyes-closed variety. Returning to a less in yer face feel is the Christian Smith and Whebba mix of ‘Diablo,’ offering an early ’90′s euphoric, arms in the air vibe and, as the mix draws to a close, we get the wonderfully funky, percussive, Mattias Tanzmann mix of Silicone Soul’s ‘Right On, Right On,’ before Ricardo Villalobos’s hypnotic mix of ‘Seawall’ leads us gently out.

Gary Beck – Algoreal

Blurb: Soma Records are pleased to present an extra special compilation of tracks from the last year, mixed exclusively by Gary Beck in what is his first ever commercially available mix CD. After the hugely successful 20th anniversary celebrations, Soma continued with their high quality output right through 2012, forging ahead with new and old artists alike. 2012 saw the debut album from Gary himself that immediately made its mark on the techno world, demonstrating his amazing talent as not just a techno producer but as an artist. Further albums from Deepchord who followed up his first album on Soma with the deep and uniquely expressional ‘Sommer’ that also spawned 2 separate vinyl releases. Heavy hitters Pig & Dan showed the versatility of Soma’s output also with their own 10 year anniversary album ‘Decade’ complete with fantastic remixes from Justin Berkovi, Carlo Lio & more. On the singles front, there were some particular standouts. Soma stalwarts Slam & Silicone Soul also released new material that became instant classics in the house & techno world. New signing Mark Reeve burst onto the scene with his Dice EP, Harvey McKay collaborated with Saytek on the tough as you like ‘Push EP’ and we also saw the Envoy classic, Detroit inspired techno groover, Seawall, reworked by Chilean wonder producer Ricardo Villalobos. Gary’s mix is a perfect example of why he has become one of the busiest DJs around. Exclusive to the Soma21 compilation is the Christian Smith & Whebba remix of the eternal Funk D’Void classic ‘Diabla’. This unforgettable track is given a very modern day rework and doesn’t fail to trigger in all the right places. As the mix begins to wind down we find Gary finishing off in epic style with the fantastic Mattias Tanzmann rework of Silicone Soul’s ‘Right On, Right On’ whilst Gary closes on Ricardo Villalobos’ interpretation of Envoy’s ‘Seawall’.
