WaMoo Papez – Fissures

Here’s something offbeat in an abstract hip hop instrumental vein for a late night.

WaMoo is part of the Warrior Monks hip hop collective. But his solo work has some unusual reference points “I make minimalist hip hop beats with a shoegaze bend, Inspired by Slowdive, Tujiko Noriko, Kevin Shields and Sufjan Stevens.” Here’s the title track from his new EP (free download). It probably owes much to stuff like Flying Lotus and Ninja Tune as it does to anything else. It’s all compressed, crinkly, bubbling textures and warped samples. Strange but good.
