Grum – The Theme

grumtheme

Been finding myself going back to early Simple Minds. I had Sons & Fascination but not Empires & Dance. Forgot how good their early stuff is and how fresh they sounded after the dischord of punk / new wave. Their use of synthesisers set them apart. I was always a fan of Theme for Great Cities (1981 – produced by System 7’s Steve Hillage) of which Jim Kerr said “One of the best moves I ever made was not to sing on ‘Theme For Great Cities’. I remember walking around with that in Glasgow on my new Sony Walkman thinking this is fucking perfect.” I’ve no idea whether this track from Grum aims to draw on early Simple Minds but it certainly does have an updated element of that widescreen synthesiser music. And that makes it bloomin brilliant in my book.

Grum’s playing here on 22 Nov https://www.facebook.com/events/1407857319444159/ (see bottom of this post for more details)

And, if you liked that, have a minimix done for Annie Mac, which uses The Theem at start and end:
