Moody as…

Inspiral Carpets had their “Cool as Fuck ” T Shirts in the 90s. Killscreen Recordings might just as well have called their new seven track EP ‘Moody As Fuck’ 20+ years later. Instead, they went for NightStalker. This is seven tracks of that intense, pissed off drum and bass sound. Fits my mood. Not enough sleep. Too much coffee, trying to compensate, and a four year old alternating between “I’m huuuungry” and tantrums to ratchet up the tension levels. There’s a track for free download.

What’s Next from Jamac Guidance SS is all booming bass and hyper skittering beats and some random background gibbering/ranting. High Crimes is a bit more measured with a recognisable melody. But that’s a relative term. Cool tune. Slug some more coffee and move on to offerings from Fractals. But really. Fractals. A bit hippyish surely? Midnight is squirting bass and abstract sirens. No thanks. Illusion has some piano stabs and a bit of humanity hidden among the bass. Good stuff.

Then four offerings from Thrash Pilot (and KS label boss). Binary 101 has rolls of thunder, cracks of lightening and sounds as if it could have been released at any time in the last ten years. Which is not to say it’s bad but neither is it particularly good. Defender 2 is better with a bit of synth action to change the tone. A bit music for old computer games, especially when the hyper beats go on long enough to give me a headache. Stage Rush is that old junglist sound that would have me running from any stage for which it was broadcasting. Finally, Firewalker with DJ Sappo.  A new version of the first release on Killscreen.

It’s good to have Killscreen back, ‘n’ all that. But this EP uses a depressingly narrow palette in the main, High Crimes excepted.
