Annie Nightmare

A post on Annie Nightingale’s new Masterpiece triple CD, though to me she will always be Annie Nightmare – a name I attribute to John Peel, albeit that google doesn’t support that memory. It’s a release that encompasses the last 50 years – for that is how long she’s been a DJ – including some classics, some obvious and a few leftfield tracks. There are three minimixes to listen and a free download of one of the more leftfield tracks.

You’ve got to admire someone who was Radio 1’s first female DJ and who started in 1970. She’s always hovered somewhere between mainstream and leftfield. Perhaps a key to her longevity as the more mainstream DJs of her era moved on some time ago.

As to the CD, there isn’t quite a chronological sense to the track list. But CD1 encompasses more of the classics, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Who and Scott Walker all making and appearance. I’d be tempted to discard it, save that it includes the wonderful Get Higher by Moonflowers. A wondrously ramshackle indie dance psychedelic West Country trip. CD2 is similarly wide-ranging but a bit more 80s/90s indie, encompassing Primal Scream (Inevitably), Underworld, Joy Division, Meat Beat Manifesto and The Cure. CD3 is aimed more squarely at today, with tracks from Dizzee Rascal, MGMT and Tinie Tempah.

There’s a lot to enjoy here but your musical tastes have to be pretty omnivorous to enjoy all of it. It’s perhaps the soundtrack to the best family party you’ve never been to.
