Premier: Strobe The Age of Love – classics remixed

.

Two classics, one older, one more recent, get the remix treatment from Lane8 and Johan Agebjörn . The latter remix is a premier for Acid Ted.

First our premier, from Johan Agebjörn, who takes on Jam & Spoon’s 1992 remix of the 1990 eponymous single from The Age of Love. The original was an acid trance classic that’s spawned any number of remixes. But the focus on trance has always left me a bit ambivalent about it. This remix drops the tranciness and is the better for it. Here, The Age Of Love – The Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon Remix – Johan Agebjörn & Mikael Ögren Re-edit) goes for something much more strongly acidic in its approach, with more than a dash of driving synth work. It all changes half way through into something more euphoric and hand waving, as the focus switches to the vocal. Less a re-edit and more a complete rework. Go get yourself a copy. Only EUR0.25 and Johan says “All proceeds from this re-edit going to UNHCR. Make techno not war.”

Secondly, Acid Ted favourite Lane8 takes on Deadmau5’s modern classic Strobe. This was only released in 2009 but with those ascending chords it really is a fabulous track – whatever you think of deadmau5. It’s getting a few remixes, including this one from Lane8.  What can he do?

Lane8 says of the remix “It was quite an honor and pretty nerve wracking to be asked to remix deadmau5’s iconic track Strobe.” The remix focuses the track on a deep house sound, with the original chords acting like a house piano line. The beats are a soft, gentle patter. It never reaches for euphoria as such, rather a slightly dreamy sense of floating pleasure. Epic like a dream.

In case you’re interested, there’s also a chopped up ebortS remix from deadmau5 himself:

  2. I’m not sure whether I like this or not. The original is one of the few trance records that I love.
